When we moved into our new home last fall, the kitchen was … well … to put it kindly, it just wasn’t our taste. There was a cabinet over the island that completely reminded us of an episode of Seinfeld. When cooking in the kitchen, I couldn’t see anyone who was sitting on the other side of the island. The countertops were a faux marble green laminate. The lighting situation was something out of an 80s movie. The cabinets were a nice shade of honey oak. The sink and faucet were a dark bronze while the appliances were black. Yes. To me, the look was a bit of a mess. I couldn’t wait to turn the kitchen into one that was more of our style.
We immediately switched out the green countertops for white and gray granite, the black appliances for stainless steel, the cabinets over the island for a range hood, the bronze sink and faucet to stainless steel and silver, and the 80s gold light fixtures to industrial and rustic lights that helped tie together our decor.
What was left? The cabinets. We tried to live with the honey oak for a few months but every time I looked into the kitchen, I couldn’t help but cringe. We spent so much time, energy, and money trying to turn the kitchen into a room that we loved. I knew that I needed to transform the cabinets. So, I picked a week and got to work painting the cabinets white. We decided to keep the island in oak to tie in the oak mantle and new oak bench dinner table that we purchased for the home.
Although the task was time-consuming, it was worth every minute. The end result is a brighter, lighter kitchen that I can’t help but fall in love with every time I enter the room. The kitchen is where I spend a lot of my time. Why not make it a room that I adore?
