Did you ever stop to think about how much time we lost trying to come up with the right outfit for our jobs? We have spent hours standing in front of the closet in the morning (or the night before) and creating mental images of what our outfit would look like the following day.
Luckily, it has been concluded that for the perfect office look you only need to have four basic things and work from there. Once you get the hang of it, the possibilities will amaze you.
Simple Guide to Nailing Your Office Look
1.) Rely on Fit
First and foremost, regardless of how fit and good looking you are, it is not professional nor is it appropriate to wear skirts that reveal too much, so mini skirts are out of the question. Midi and above the knee length are the most common ones, but midi cap is also fine.
As for the skirt types, A-line skirts are the most flattering ones, so if you choose those you will not make a mistake, while godet skirts draw attention from a bit wider waist to the hemline. Pencil skirts are perfect for formal occasions, and they accentuate the curves since they are fitted down to the knee.
Form-Fitting Shirts
As for men, button down shirts are the number one item you will be wearing day after day, so best thing is to have a few of high-quality. To allow yourself a luxury of owning custom shirts was unimaginable before, but it has proven to be a really good investment since these are made just for you and will fit you perfectly, unlike ready-made ones.
You can choose pretty much any material, and there are no limitations in color, but make sure it matches the rest of your outfit and/or your tie. The best thing about button downs is that you can wear them under a sweater for a layered look and with or without jacket, depending on how formal the occasion is.
Well-Tailored Pants
Dress pants are the most common ones in the office, and you can have two kinds: pleated or flat front. Pleated pants could be seen often in the past, but today men tend to avoid them in general since they make the area below your torso look really bulky. Men with bigger thighs can go with pleats since they are very comfortable and will allow you some extra room. For slimmer men, flat fronts are the best choice since these fit very well. However, if they are too tight they will accentuate your curves, and you might want to avoid that.
It is not easy coming up with the perfect office look, you want to look professional and powerful, but also not too strict. While some may think that these things are mutually exclusive, they are not, and you can look sharp and classy in the office without worrying that you seem unprofessional.
2.) Love Color
It is not about the way power suits change the appearance of the woman wearing it, but the feeling of power they give. A well-fitting jacket combined with the perfect pants (or skirt for that matter) will make a woman really feel like a boss. The best thing is that you don’t have to limit yourself to wearing only dark colors: pink, blue, red, grey, green … all of these colors are wonderful and wearing them will not make you look less professional.
A straight skirt and jacket are a flattering fit for curvy women, while those with a more boyish figure should choose a trim, slightly cropped jacket paired with godet skirts.
3.) Add an Accessory
Add a simple and effective accessory from time to time: catchy watch for men or colorful scarf for women. Also, don’t be afraid to experiment because, who knows—maybe you will discover a new combination.
When you get ready to prepare your work outfit, think of these three things:
- Rely on fit
- Love color
- Add an accessory
