I used to color my hair all the time. From black to dark brown to deep auburn to blonde. I’ve also had very many hairstyles. From short to long to bangs to no bangs to sideswept bangs to a lot of layers to very little layers. When it comes to hair, I used to have so much fun playing with the style and color.
And then … all of a sudden … I stopped having fun with my hair. Instead, I found a hairstyle that I really liked. I also found a hair color that I really liked (my natural hair color). I would get my hair trimmed every once in a while and not touch it with color. That lasted for about four years. Yes, for four years, I rocked the au naturale hair color look (no gray hair yet).
And then … thanks to Pinterest, my playfulness with hair started to creep back into my life. From short choppy bobs to lobs to long layers, I found myself scrolling through all sorts of super cute hairstyles in my feed.
A few days a ago, I found a hair color style that I loved (see #1 below). I expanded the photo on my phone, showed the picture to my husband, and asked, “What do you think?” He said, “Yes, do it.”
I texted the photo to my friend and asked, “What do you think?” She said, “Yes, do it.”
The next thing I knew I was at the salon this past Saturday showing the stylist the photo of #1. Four hours later, I walked out of the salon with an ombre color (dark brown to light brown to blonde). So, I went from not touching my hair color for four years to a style that I like to call “Go Big or Go Home.”
After playing with my hair for a few days, I realized that I wanted the blonde to be a bit darker. It was just too blonde for my taste and complexion. So, the blonde was darkened yesterday … and now? I love it so much. The different colors running through the strands add so much dimension and texture. It was the perfect way to welcome a new hair color into the mix.
Plus, as I grow my hair out, the color will grow out with it. Win-win!
8 Hair Color Ideas for Short and Medium Length Hair
Here are some of my favorite styles and hair color ideas that I came across while perusing Pinterest. I decided on #1 but, as I mentioned above, the bright blonde is a bit of a dirty blonde now.
