Chicago-Style Hot Dogs

One of my favorites cities is Chicago. There are not enough words to describe my love for this amazing city. Ever since my first trip to Chicago when I was very young, I’ve always wanted to live in a Chicago townhouse. A couple years ago, we ended up buying a townhouse…in Washington, D.C. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love this city but nothing will compare with my love for Chicago. Thankfully, quite a few of our friends live in Chicago so we try to sneak up there as often as possible.

The people, the attractions, the food…what’s not to love about that city? Speaking of food, would you believe me if I told you that my husband is in love with hot dogs? Well, if not, now you do…and when I say love, I mean obsessed. Whenever we go to the grocery store he always has to pick up a package of hot dogs. I’ll catch him snacking on them and he’ll even request them for dinner every once in a while.

Usually I try to steer away from the whole “hot dogs for dinner” idea but recently I decided to embrace it by combining my love for Chicago with his love for hot dogs. We went to the grocery store and bought all sorts of condiments to create our very own Chicago-Style Hot Dogs. After piling the toppings one after another we were eventually face-to-face with fully loaded hot dogs that were “dragged through the garden”…and it was love at first bite.

Chicago-Style Hot Dogs

Ingredients:

  • 1 all-beef hot dog
  • 1 hot dog bun, preferably poppy seed
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon sweet green pickle relish
  • 1 tablespoon chopped onion
  • 4 tomato wedges
  • 1 dill pickle spear
  • 2 short peppers
  • 1 dash celery salt

Directions:

  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Reduce heat to low and place the hot dog in the water. Cook the hot dog for five minutes or until done. Remove the hot dog from the water and place a steamer basket in the pot. Place the bun in the pot and steam for a few minutes.
  2. Place the hot dog in the steamed bun and pile the toppings onto the hot dog in the following order: mustard, relish, onion, tomatoes, pickle spear, short peppers, and celery salt.

What is your favorite hot dog style?

  1. I heart Chicago hot dogs, and pizza! I've been a Chicago girl my whole life, and then my dear husband transplanted us four years ago to Cincy! My life has not been the same…or should I say pizza and hot dog nights have not been the same since!

  2. Aw, I love that you love my city! When it comes to our hot dogs, though, I do have a confession: this 5th generation Chicago girl puts KETCHUP on her hotdogs…it's funny how strictly verboten that is, but I do it anyway!
