Turkey Burgers with Turkey Bacon, Dill Mayo, Mushrooms and Onions

Turkey Burger with Turkey Bacon, Dill Mayo, Mushrooms and Onions

When it comes to burgers, I tend to be a traditionalist. I love a burger patty that is piled high with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, ketchup, and mustard. However, I’m never afraid to venture out and try new a new combination of spices, veggies, and meat.

Take for example turkey burgers. For the longest time, I was always against turkey burgers and turkey bacon. I loved my regular burgers with my regular, greasy bacon. My ways of venturing out was to combine the two and throw some Swiss cheese and mushrooms for an amazing ‘shroom burger. I have always considered this burger to be one delicious looking and tasting dish.

Eventually, I ended up trying a turkey burger, as well as turkey bacon and…I must admit…I fell in love with both. Even though nothing will ever beat the succulent taste of grilled hamburger meat and cooked regular bacon, I am hooked to these healthy alternatives.

Last night, my husband was craving hamburgers. As for me, I was in the mood for something quick and tasty since my laundry list of to dos was still piled high as of 10:30 p.m. last night (we didn’t eat until 11:00 p.m. last night…how horrible is that?!).

Due to his craving for grilled meat and my need for something quick, I ran up to the grocery store to pick up essential items…and that’s when I ran into a problem. The grocery store was out of ground beef. I don’t think I’ve ever come across this issue in the past…but then again, I was one of the only people grocery shopping at 9:30 p.m. last night so I’m pretty sure they were counting down the minutes until I left the store.

Since the store only had ground turkey, I decided to make do with what was available. I quickly brainstormed and came up with a flavor combination that seemed very appealing to me and rushed home to share the good news. While my husband headed to the grill, I stayed in the kitchen to prepare the goods that were used as toppings. The end result was the turkey burger pictured above. In other words, the end result was mouth-watering and delicious. Still need more convincing? The end result was a burger full of flavor that was easy to prepare and perfect to enjoy on a warm summer night.

  • 1 tablespoon fresh dill

  4. Pour the olive oil in a pan and heat. Toss the mushrooms and onion slices onto the warm oil. Saute for 5 minutes or until softened. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Place the turkey bacon slices on a baking sheet and bake at 375 for 8 to 12 minutes or until cooked.
  6. Mix together the mayo and dill to form the dill sauce.
  7. Form the turkey burgers: Take the bottom portion of the bun and spread the dill mayo on the side that will touch the patty. Place the patty on top of the dill sauce and layer the rest of the prepared items in the following order: Mushroom and onion mixture, turkey bacon, spring mix lettuce, top of the bun.

  1. What a gorgeous photo of a very tempting burger (even at 11pm!) Not only does it have two of my favorite ingredients (bacon and mushrooms), but that dill sauce sounds like the perfect accompaniment.

  2. Jen, this looks amazing! I must ask, though. How do you get such wonderful pictures at 11pm? I struggle to get pictures half that good at 4:30. What's your secret?

  3. jen, holy healthy yummmmness. This sounds excellent. I scanned over the turkey bacon tonight and still went with the regular but we make the chicken and turkey burgers all the time. This sounds great, and perfect for a scorcher of a hot night like this.
    thanks for sharing.

  4. My husband and I really love turkey burgers and, when we can get our hands on it, also enjoy making venison burgers. We actually had venison burgers Friday night with caramelized onions and mushrooms. Burgers just taste like summer, don't they? Happy first day of summer!

  5. These look so yummy! It is too hot outside to grill. Is there a way to cook the turkey burgers under the broiler or on the stove? At what temperature and for how long would I need to cook these with a different method?
