Tips for Keeping Cookies Fresh

Tips for Keeping Cookies Fresh

There are plenty of cookie cravings that take place in our house. My husband has quite the sweet tooth and so do our guests. I always try to keep the cookie dome filled to the brim with all sorts of sweet goodies. Does this sound familiar? What happens when you go to all the trouble of baking cookies but find that you can’t eat them fast enough? No matter how much we love cookies, sometimes we find that there are just way too many cookies to consume within a couple of days, especially since it’s just the two of us.

If you ever get the urge to bake cookies but worry about preserving them in order to last longer than just a few days, be sure to follow the steps below:

  • Make the cookie dough, shape the dough into tablespoon-sized balls, bake what you know you’ll eat within the next three days and store what you won’t eat into air-tight containers in the freezer. The next time you have a cookie craving, simply preheat the oven, prepare the baking sheet with parchment paper, place the frozen dough balls on the baking sheet and bake until the cookies are done. Note: Avoid freezing cookie dough that has a cake-like or liquid-based batter.
  • Allow the baked cookies to completely cool before stacking or storing. Warm cookies, when stored, will stick together and create a mess when you try to eat them later.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container or on the baking sheet tightly covered with plastic wrap or foil.
  • Store cookies that have a cream cheese or yogurt frosting in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
  • Place baked cookies in the freezer for up to three weeks. Simply pop them in the microwave or oven to warm them up and return them to their soft state.

What are some of your tried and true ways to get cookies to last longer?

P.S. On Mom It Forward today, you will find a shopping list for the bare-bone kitchen essentials that I think are so important to always have in the kitchen. Basically, if you have these in your kitchen, you should be prepared to produce many different types of dishes at the spur of the moment.

By having these on-hand, your shopping will be reduced to buying only the perishable items. As long as you keep a well-stocked kitchen full of main baking and cooking essentials, your meals will be easier to cook and less expensive over time.

  1. Love these tips, especially the one for freezing cookies! Somehow I always forget I can do that and end up wasting them…I'll have to keep your post bookmarked as a reminder!

  2. This is a good list, even though my boys usually devour everything cookie shaped within a day. :)

Swapping out part of your oils for applesauce or using a little bit of xanthum gum or Ultra gel (an instant corn starch) as moisture binders will also give cookies a longer shelf life and make them go through the freeze and thaw process gracefully.

  3. I have to admit that cookies rarely last very long in my house, so I don't have many good tips.

However, when it comes to decorated cookies, I always do the flood icing the same day that I bake them because it seems to "seal off" the cookie for some reason. Individually wrapping in plastic bags works well for decorated cookies, as well!
