The Sacred Sangria

Sangria is a delicious, fruit-based wine punch with its traditional heritage well rooted in Spain. Typically, Sangria is made with red wine, fresh, seasonal fruit and a bit of bubbly water or citrus flavored soda. It is easy to make, easy to drink and a huge hit at summer get togethers - even for those who are not "into wine."

One of the beauties of Sangria recipes is that you can use a variety of different wines in the recipe mix. Below are some recipes that you should try during the hot summer days and nights.

The Basic Sangria

Ingredients:
  • 1 bottle of red wine (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Rioja reds, Zinfandel, Shiraz)
  • 1 lemon cut into wedges
  • 1 orange cut into wedges
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 shot brandy
  • 2 cups ginger ale or club soda
  • Additional ideas: sliced strawberries, peaches, handful of fresh blueberries, raspberries, kiwi, a shot or two of gin, brandy or rum, a cup or ginger ale, citrus soda or lime juice
Directions:
  • Pour wine in the pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon and orange into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and add sugar and brandy. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale or club soda just before serving.

Super Fruity Sangria

Ingredients:
  • 1 bottle of your favorite white wine
  • 1 lemon cut into wedges
  • 1 orange cut into wedges
  • 1 lime cut into wedges
  • 1 peach cut into wedges
  • 1/2 cup lemonade or limeade
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 shots of apricot, peach or berry flavored brandy
  • 2 cups ginger ale
  • Additional idea: one can of diced pineapple pieces with juice
Directions:
  • Pour wine in the pitcher and squeeze juice wedges from the lemon, orange and lime into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and add sliced peaches, strawberries, lemonade/limeade, sugar and brandy. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale and ice just before serving.

Best Party Sangria

Ingredients:
  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1 lemon cut into wedges
  • 1 orange cut into wedges
  • 1 lime cut into wedges
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • splash of orange juice or lemonade
  • 2 shots of gin or triple sec (optional)
  • 1 cup of raspberries or strawberries (may use thawed or frozen)
  • 1 small can of diced pineapples (with juice)
  • 4 cups ginger ale
Directions:
  • Pour wine into large pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the lemon, orange and lime into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and pineapple then add sugar, orange juice and gin. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale, berries and ice just before serving.

White Wine Sangria

Ingredients:
  • 1 bottle of white wine (Riesling, Albarino, Chablis, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc)
  • 2/3 cup white sugar
  • 3 orange (sliced) or may substitute 1 cup of orange juice
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 lime
  • 1/2 liter of ginger ale or club soda
Directions:
  • Pour wine in the pitcher and squeeze the juice wedges from the orange, lemon and lime into the wine. Toss in the fruit wedges (leaving out seeds if possible) and add sugar. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale of club soda just before serving.

Strawberry Sangria

Ingredients:
  • 1 bottle of rose wine
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups strawberry lemonade
  • 1 cup sliced strawberries (may use frozen strawberries in a pinch)
  • 2 cups ginger ale
Directions:
  • Pour wine in the pitcher and add sliced strawberries. Next add sugar, strawberry lemonade and stir gently. Chill overnight. Add ginger ale and ice just before serving.

Very Berry Sangria

Ingredients:
  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1/2 cup raspberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup blackberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1/2 cup blueberries (fresh of frozen)
  • 1/2 cup strawberries (sliced)
  • 1 bottle of ginger ale
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 oz. blackberry liqueur
Directions:
  • Toss the wine, the berries, the blackberry liqueur and the sugar in a pitcher, cover and place in the refrigerator overnight. Pour in a bottle of chilled ginger ale and ice just prior to serving.
These recipes are all easy to accomplish and well worth the overnight wait. You are bound to quench your thirst in these fruity, refreshing drinks!
